Human Trafficking rarely happens the way it's portrayed onscreen.
In movies like the "Taken" franchise, traffickers are portrayed as kidnapping people - usually women and girls - and then selling them to the highest bidder. This dramatic image can enter the popular imagination and be repeated as fact. Sex trafficking does not really work this way. Rather than being abducted, trafficking victims are often simply lied to.
Sex trafficking victims are often promised jobs in major cities. When they arrive these people - mostly women and girls, but some men and boys as well - discover that they will be forced to perform commercial sex acts. Occasionally, traffickers pose as international matchmakers or dating services. No matter the route these modern-day enslavers use lies, coercion, and threats in order to make people enter the sex industry.
