Refugees and Modern-Day Enslavement
In 2001, the United Nations established June 20th as World Refugee Day. In 2019 the UN promoted #StepWithRefugees, a program similar to Love146. If you are able to you can run, walk, or jog in support of refugees this year. World Refugee Day is also a good time to educate yourself about the vulnerability of this population to human trafficking.
In a 2015 blog post for End Slavery Now Philip Hyldgaard noted that 51.2 million individuals were displaced by violence, strife, and persecution. These facts come from a 2013 report by the UNHCR. Today, that number is closer to 68.5 million. These people, driven by desperation to better their lives, are particularly vulnerable to the false promises of human traffickers.
