Mauritanian Refugees in Ohio
Mauritania, a country in northwest Africa, outlawed enslavement in 1981. It was the last country on earth to do so. Due to the fact that Mauritania is mostly desert and the rule of law is relatively weak, modern day enslavement continues unofficially. Modern day abolitionists in that country are also regularly prosecuted.
As a result there are many Mauritanian refugees living in the United States. Many of them live in Ohio specifically. Unfortunately, in recent years these freedom seekers are facing deportation back to enslavement and death.
