Billionaire Alleged Trafficker Jeffrey Epstein Arrested

Update: On the morning of August 10th 2019, Jeffrey Epstein was found dead in his lower Manhattan jail cell of an apparent suicide. He was 66.

On Saturday July 6th 2019 Jeffrey Epstein, a billionaire financier who owns a mansion in New York City and a Caribbean island, was arrested in New Jersey after a trip to Paris. On Monday July 8th Epstein appeared in court where he was charged with sex trafficking and conspiracy to commit sex trafficking of women and girls as young as 14 years old. These alleged incidents occurred in New York and Florida between 2002 and 2005. Due to Epstein's vast resources which include billions of dollars and several private planes, the government is opposing bail.

The story is twisted and sordid. According to the attorney for two of the women accusing Epstein, Monday's charges were "a long time coming." This lag was in part due to the work of Alex Acosta, former US Attorney for the Southern District of Florida and current US Labor Secretary, who got initial charges reduced to a "slap on the wrist" in 2007. Due to the fact that there is no statute of limitation for charges of sexual assault of a minor, Epstein is finally facing charges in New York and Florida. It is also worth noting that the plea deal granted by Acosta likely violated the rights of Epstein's accusers, thereby breaking the law.
