Due to a number of factors, such as limiting parents to one or two children and gendercide of female infants, men in China outnumber women to a significant degree. This has led many Chinese men, particularly lower-income men, to turn to traffickers in order to find wives. For between 2,000 to 3,000 US dollars, one can purchase a teenage bride from neighboring Myanmar for "three years and a baby."
This is an example of forced marriage, a terrible institution which combines different forms of modern day enslavement. Women and girls in forced marriages experience domestic servitude. They are sexually enslaved by their husbands. Since many unwilling brides are under the age of 18, forced marriage often involves forced child labor as well.
