This documentary by lawyer and activist Bryan Stevenson explores the intersections of racism, poverty, enslavement, lynching, and mass incarceration against the backdrop of the U.S. legal system. Based on his own experience as an attorney as well as extensive interviews, Stevenson shows how the criminal justice system ensures that the rich and connected fare better than the poor and marginalized. In this way courts ensure that there will be an incarcerated underclass that serve as unpaid prison labor in a variety of capacities.
